Side-to-side play at the rim or a dry grinding feel means the internals are gone. Kit drops in fresh bearings and seals to lock grit out. Clean the bore properly before fitting. Pull the old bearings with a proper puller, not a drift — gouge the seat and the new ones won't sit true. Line the internal spacer up before you drive the second bearing home, or you'll bind the hub.
