This housing is situated on the primary drive side of the engine. It is responsible for transferring power from the crank to the transmission. Over time, the tabs on the friction plates hammer against the fingers, creating steps. This leads to a jerky feel at the lever. Replacing the worn factory part with this machined unit restores smooth operation. You will need to drill out the rivets on your stock gear to complete the swap. Ensure the backing plate is flush before final assembly.
