What it is

Right, this is the piston ring that lives inside the damper cartridge, sealing the piston head against the cartridge bore so oil flows through the shim stack instead of slipping past it. It is not the oil seal at the top of the fork leg, and it is not the dust seal either. Two completely different jobs. If your damping has gone vague, the rebound feels mushy, or the fork blows through its stroke without the usual control, a worn piston ring is a prime suspect. Fit it during a full cartridge strip and rebuild, not a quick oil-and-seal swap.
