What it is
The SHOWA GAS SEAL FORK, fork seals. Stocked by Iron Offroad, the UK MX hard parts specialist.
Showa stuff a small high-pressure nitrogen charge inside the cartridge to stop the oil cavitating when the damper piston works hard. This seal is what keeps that gas where it belongs, locked away from the oil side. When it lets go, gas bleeds into the oil and the damping turns to porridge. Fork feels vague over braking bumps, blows through the stroke, packs down on big hits. Honda CRF250/450 R, RX and RWE riders and Kawasaki MX bikes running Showa cartridges should treat it as a service item. Fit it during a full fork rebuild, not on its own.
