Pull a tired fork apart and you'll usually find this little ring is the bit that's been quietly causing your seal grief. The spacer sits on top of the oil seal in the slider, holds it at the right depth, and gives the snap-ring something solid to bite against. When it's bent, scored or pitted from years of pounding, the seal starts to walk, the snap-ring loses its seat, and you're chasing leaks every other weekend. Drop a fresh one in while the fork's stripped on the bench. Cheap insurance against doing the job twice.
