Bolt the long red set over your fork tubes and you've got proper coverage from roost, grit and the odd flying stone the rider in front kicks up. The longer cut suits taller forks and bikes that spend more time clearing ruts than skimming hardpack. Pull them off after a season and read the wear: scuffed at the top, you're catching debris before it reaches the seal; fraying along the seam or shredded at the bottom edge means they've done their work and want replacing. Rinse them out when you wash the bike, check after every meeting, swap when tired.
