The cable links the lever to the clutch actuator arm, and it's a part that quietly degrades: internal friction builds, the pull gets heavy, and engagement turns unpredictable. Swapping it back to spec restores a light, repeatable feel at the bar. Route it along the original path so it doesn't bind on full lock. Check free-play at the lever afterwards and confirm the clutch fully disengages with the bike in gear. A standard workshop replacement, and one most XR owners leave far too long.
