The intermediate knob hooks up out of ruts and stays planted when you trail-brake into a flat corner. UK loam, Hawkstone shale, summer hardpack at Cusses Gorse — it copes. Run a fresh tube or mousse, seat the bead properly, and torque the rim lock. Once the edges round off you'll feel the back step out under power. Swap it before that point if you're racing.
