Hex nut lives deep inside the Showa cartridge, holding the damping stack together while your fork eats hits. It sees vibration every lap and hydraulic pressure on every compression stroke. Round the flats once and you'll fight it for an hour on the next service; strip the threads and the cartridge is scrap. Fit a fresh one when you split the fork on a CRF 250 R, 250 RX, 450 R or 450 L rebuild. Use the right size socket, no shortcuts with adjustable spanners, and torque to Showa's spec. Get this bit right and the fork comes apart cleanly next time.
