This dust wiper is the first line of defence for your 48mm fork assembly. It sits at the base of the outer tube to scrape mud, water, and grit off the stanchion before it can reach the oil seal. Cracked or loose wipers allow abrasive material to enter the fork, leading to premature oil seal failure. Replace these during every suspension service or if you notice the rubber perishing.
