This seal prevents coolant from migrating into the gearbox oil or leaking through the weep hole. It sits behind the water pump impeller on the drive shaft. Replace this part immediately if you notice milky oil or a drop in coolant levels. It is a standard service item during a water pump rebuild. Ensure the shaft is free from scoring or grooves before installation to prevent premature failure. Use a light smear of grease on the inner lip to aid assembly and protect the seal during the first rotation.
