Over time, these parts wear oval, leading to oil consumption and poor valve seating. Replace these during a head rebuild if you detect any stem-to-guide play beyond factory limits. Installation requires professional tools to press the old units out and the new ones in. Once installed, the guides must be reamed to the correct internal diameter for your valve stems.
